We went today to Wootton Rivers in Wiltshire, where we took a
stroll along the tow path of the Kennet and Avon canal ( posting to
follow in habitat forum). On passing through the village, we came
across a signpost for St. Andrew's Church, which pointed up a long
winding pathway, all that was visible from the road. On following
the path, we came upon the lovely 13th Century church, which to our
surprise in these times, was unlocked and open. An informative
leaflet, compiled by Audrey Tomlin, discusses the many unique
features of the church, from the Priest's Door to the Pulpit.
Undoubtedly the most interesting piece of history, is the George V
Coronation Clock, made by local "clock man", John Kingstone Spratt.
To reduce costs in the making of the clock, which were considered
too high in 1911, "Jack Spratt" completed the project with scrap
metal donated by the villagers. It is a beautiful church, in the
lovely surroundings of a "thatched cottage" village, with a well
organised and attended cemetery.
