We returned to Wootton Rivers in Wiltshire yesterday, having not
been there for about 10 years or so. The purpose of the visit was
to take a leisurely Sunday stroll along the tow path of the
Kennet and Avon canal. Of course, the inevitable happened and we
ended up by parking in the pub car park! We just couldn't leave
until we had had a drink, which, when we saw the menu and smelt
the lovely cooking aromas coming from the kitchen, led to lunch.
The Royal Oak is a 16th Century, thatched freehouse and is a real
"picture box" to look at, low beams, log fires in winter etc.
When we lived quite locally, this used to be a regular haunt for
us, because of the welcoming Landlords and staff and the
fantastic food. Guess what! After all this time, it's still the
same Landlords, who have now been there for some 35 years and
still the same fantastic food, at what we thought was exceptional
value for money prices. There isn't much in the way of outdoor
seating, as there is no garden, but the few tables are in a real
"sun trap" position and in the unbelievably hot sunshine of mid
September, was just right for a great enjoyable "Al Fresco"
lunch. The place was packed, which is great to see in these
troubled economic times, and certainly still gets the thumbs up
from us.
