I have just finished reading The Glowing Hours, by Marina Oliver; a
romantic fiction novel.
Set in Birmingham in the 1920's, it tells the story of 3 girls,
from very different backgrounds, who's friendship must overcome
impossible odds if they are to achieve their dream: to dance at the
Folies-Bergere. The characters come from violent, bigoted and
uncaring families respectively, all equally disfunctional and is a
story of class struggle at it's best.
For all that, it wasn't too sentimental and was a thoroughly
engrossing read.
This is not one of the author's latest offerings and I look forward
to reading more of her work. Read more...

Just finished Miss Purdy's Class, By Annie Murray, a Romantic
Fiction novel.
In 1936, Gwen Purdy, awaiting her marriage to the local
clergyman, leaves her middle class home to take a short term
appointment as aschoolteacher in a poor area of Birmingham. One
of the elderly teachers at the school inspires Gwen and she
becomes drawn into the children's lives, as she begins to
understand the appalling hardships they endure.
She meets and falls in love with Daniel, the eldest brother of
one of her class, who is an ardent union activist. She realises
that marriage to her fiance would be a terrible mistake and
breaks off the engagement, to remain with her pupils in
Birmingham.
Daniel, however, has secrets in his past, but when he goes to
Spain to fight for the rights of the working classes, Gwen
realises that she loves him, whether they can be together, or
not. She now realises that she is ready to learn to fly on her
own.
