How I saved money on my food bill.

For several months I have lived on a shoe string. With less money than normal and had to cut back on a few household luxuries. I guess you would think I was crazy, if I said that I was cutting back and massively reducing my food bill too?

I made a great discovery one day whilst in the local shop, where actually it is normally a little more expensive than the regular giant supermarket chains. I’m not embarrassed to say or admit it, but I found the "knock down shelf" and was stunned to find lots of amazing food items for sale at a third of the price. I checked the out of date labels and sure enough they were still in date. I’ve been lucky to find wonderful packets of salmon, pizzas, potatoes, best sausages, cakes, quiches, fruit and vegetable and much more.

I have a spacious freezer stood in the kitchen which was usually running half empty, or half full if I want to be more optimistic. I have often come home with two shopping bags of food which isn’t out of date and legally is safe to eat. Of course the shop wouldn’t put out "out of date" food? No they don’t, if it doesn’t sell it goes in the skip and thrown away. Sad to think that so much food is wasted when there could be people that need it. Why not give it away?

So on many occasions I have found dozens of cartons of milk for sale... instead of the usual £1.20 or whatever ive bought a basket load at 10p a litre. I freeze it all and use it as and when and it’s great I can afford to use as much as I wish. So next time you go to the shops checkout the knock down shelf and see what things you can find.

I've honestly come home with bags full for a fiver and it lasts me for ages thanks to the good old freezer. Im not greedy but I go in twice a day now as I live two minutes walk away from the store and I have even learned at which times is best to go too... Sunday is a great day especially as you as thinking about Sunday roast. I've found chickens at half price and it gives me a kick to think im saving cash at times which have been financially hard.
